What many women don’t know is that when they go through menopause their estrogen and progesterone levels can deplete as much as 80%, this attributes to many of the menopausal symptoms such as depression, weight gain and general achiness. Bio identical replacement therapy brings a menopausal woman back to the hormone levels of an average 30 something woman, the positive feedback from treated women thus far has been very moving, but doctors argue that there havn’t been enough studies and the increased risk of breast cancer may not make it worth it.

I’ve posted a couple of articles that go further into the discussion, if you know somebody that suffers with pre/post menapausal symptoms its definitely an alternative therapy to consider…

Its intended mainly as a weight loss tool, where you enter everything you eat then your calories and weight loss are tracked. The reason I joined was because it also tracks all the vitamins and nutrients in your diet, so you are able to see what your lacking ect. As a vegetarian I thought that this would be a useful tool for me, where I thought I may be deficient (iron, protein) I was actually exceeding my needs but as it turns out I have only been receiving about 1/3 to 1/2 of my bodys calcium requirements- something I havn’t really thought too much about-until now.

They offer a free 1 week trial so even if you don’t want to sign up for the service it can give you a good snapshot of your diet.

Having done the cleanse myself I do believe that it is an amazing way to detox the body, and a nice side effect losing as much as 3lbs in one day. Although I do not think this is a good way to achieve long lasting results with most people reporting a regain of at least half the weight lost. So the bottom line- It definitely takes a lot of will power, but is a fairly simple method to temporarily ditch the pounds for a special event or holiday.

Click Here, for the Master Cleanse recipe and directions!

*I would encourage anyone looking to begin the cleanse to consult their doctor prior!

1. Okay so this is a big advantage for krill- No disgusting fishy after burps…anyone who takes fish oil supplements knows about these.

2. Krill contains an antioxidant called astaxanthin, this is what makes it pinky-red in colour- kind of like a lobster or crab. Since astaxanthin crosses the blood-brain barrier it could theoretically protect the eye, brain and central nervous system from free radical damage.

3. There have been some promising studies conducted showing the benefits of krill oil on a persons cholesterol levels. 120 people were give either krill oil or a placebo, and the group with krill oil saw a 34% reduction in bad (ldl) cholesterol and a 43.5% increase in good cholesterol (hdl) in comparison to the control group. Where as fish oil reduced LDL cholesterol by 4.6% and increased HDL cholesterol by 4.2%.

4. Although krill does seem to come out on top it is important to remember that there have been thousands of studies done on fish oil and krill oil has only had 10 reputable studies which were published in medical journals.

Another holiday is upon us, thus for another family dinner for most… heres some quick tips to cut the fat not the fun this weekend!

-Use plain yogurt as a replacement for mayo or butter in your side dishes and sauces, you keep the creamy consistency and loose the fat.

-Cook with light amounts of olive oil on the veggies instead of butter or margarine, there are less calories per serving and you will also receive a dose of heart healthy fats. Remember your body does NOT know what to do with margarine! Its a heavily processed condiment, if you must, at least use real butter. Another note on olive oil it can not be heated above smoke point, between 350-400 F or else it looses its heart healthy fatty acid properties, so either warm it up slightly or cook veggies first and coat with room temp oil.

-Load up on veggies! Make that plate 80% veggies, get full on fibre- although protein is extremely important, you don’t need more than a 3 oz serving. Quick Fact- the average North American consumes 4X more protein then there body actually requires…

- Replace your creamy dressings for a lighter vinaigrette, simple!

- Pass on the pie… skip dessert save 500 calories on average, if your going to eat it eat the real thing- no sugar free cancer causing jello or cool whip.

- Pause… remember to take a breath between bites and put that fork down, give your stomach some time to tell your brain its full, and easily avoid over eating.

So arms seems to be a sore spot amongst women… we don’t want them to be too fatty or too bulky. If you have been to any of the classes at my studio then you are likely very aware of the exercise I call “ballet arms.” Its really easy to do and requires no equipment, all you need is 8 minutes a day 4 days a week to achieve those toned and tiny but most importantly strong arms!

Stand with arms up shoulder height, rotate between pulsing the arms with palms facing up and then slapping with the palms facing down, your main goal here is to just keep the arms at should height, you might begin at 3-4 minutes but the goal is to eventually keep them up for 8 minutes. You will want to hold the abdominals in tight and move the legs to keep your whole body active!
